We love our peanut butter. Adam eats it by the spoonful, usually it's store bought and full of all those tasty chemicals. Thanks to Covid- 19, we've started making our own && YES it's worth it.
When we first moved out to the mountains, we wanted to be more self-reliant & skip the worry of running to the grocery store every week. For us, peanut butter is a staple. Adam would eat a jar in one sitting, if only we had an endless supply.
Covid-19 is happening & our small business has already taken a huge hit. So, what better time to make all your own stuff?! The quick and easy steps to our homemade peanut butter are below- - -
Toastin' Time
Throw all your peanuts on a baking sheet and roast/toast 'em for 10 minutes at 350 degrees. This step helps release the natural oils in the peanuts, which helps make your peanut butter nice and creamy!
Shelley Sells pnutShells by the Seashore
We like to buy our peanuts in the shell. It's cheaper & you can have a glorious time cracking 5000000 peanuts! Either shell your peanuts or buy them shelled (punk).
Blend It Up
Grab your blender and start by pulsing the peanuts 3 or so times. So, pulse, pulse, pulse, but don't actually blend. You just want them broken up, like so-
*If you want crunchy peanut butter, pull 1/2 cup of chopped nuts out of blender and set aside.
Mix Mix Dilla Dillaa
Blend the peanuts for 3 minutes, stopping every minute to scrap the sides down. We didn't think the scraping would make much but it makes ALL the difference. Don't be lazy, do it! Here are pictures of each minute- -
After the first minute-
After the second minute-
After the third minute-
At this stage, add in 1 table spoon honey, 1 teaspoon salt & a small amount of oil, if you want your peanut butter extra creamy. Blend again for 2 minutes.
Crunchy-
After the full 5 minutes of blending, if you want crunchy peanut butter- add those peanuts back in that you had set aside. Pulse 3x then add to jar!
Creamy-
After the full 5 minutes of blending or until you reach the desired creaminess, add your fresh peanut butter to a jar!
Left side is crunchy peanut butter. Right side is creamy peanut butter.
We used 2 1/2 cups of peanut butter, 1 tbpn of honey, 1 tspn salt, ~1tbpn oil. This amount makes 2 cups of peanut butter.
