Ginger Buggin'

Homemade soda anyone?!

A ginger bug is a wild yeast starter that is used to make homemade sodas. Since the ginger bug is fermented, the sodas are high in probiotics which leads me to think they are healthy sodas?! I'm not a doctor so please don't quote me on that. What I can tell you for sure is that you can soon be enjoying bubbly, homemade pops!

We started with 1Tbspn of raw sugar, 1Tbspn of grated/chopped organic ginger & 1 pint of water (chlorine free). Stir all the goods together in a jar, until the sugar is mixed in. You can use any old jar you have, just make sure it is sterilized.

Once you have everything good & mixed, top the jar with a coffee filter, cheese cloth, cut a shirt up, anything you want to make sure the top is covered but breathable. You want to keep fruit flies out but allow the natural yeasts and bacteria from the air in.

You'll need to feed this starter just like the sourdough starter. We fed it- 1 Tspn sugar, 1 spn water daily, for a week. After a few days of feeding, you should start to see bubbles. The bottom will also start to form a white yeast- don't worry!! This is natural. You'll see ginger floating on the top & ginger on the bottom of the jar. After 7 days, you can make homemade sodas!
